Figuring Out What To Wear To A Photoshoot

Photoshoot styling… one of the hardest choices ever made: “But what do I wear?!” Let’s all take a deep breath! Most photographers, myself included, want each session to be as painless as possible for their clients. So I hope I can relieve some of your worries today, before you even check your closets or run to the stores looking for clothes to put together for your photoshoot. I’m going to show you how you can plan your outfits in 3 easy steps, yep just 3!

Find your photographer.

First, you want to start your process by finding your photographer. If you already have one picked out, great! Once you have your photographer picked out, find their social media pages, portfolios, or ask for samples of their work. Take a quick peek at their images and see what colors tend to show up most, and make sure they are colors that you like, that match your style, and maybe even match what you have in your closet already.

If you get to the end of this post and you still feel like you are having a tough time deciding what to wear, reach out to your photographer. Once you book a photographer, they will typically schedule a consultation day. There, they will go over the specifics, the schedule, locations, ideas, and even outfits! They are also always willing to answer any questions you may have, so don’t be afraid to reach out and ask away.

Look at your closet

Next, I want you to head to your closet to see what you already have. What style, articles, colors, and accessories do you already have that you love most? Work with those! We want you to be as comfortable as possible. So if you don’t normally wear dresses, then don’t feel pressured to wear them to a photoshoot because social media says you have to!

You want a nice mix of styles and candid photographs from your session, so no one wants you to feel uncomfortable and stiff. These pictures are yours forever, so wear what makes you comfortable!

Also, most articles you will read on styling for a photoshoot will tell you to stay away from prints and textures. Unpopular opinion: WEAR THEM! Obviously, not everyone can pull off a print or a texture. But when done tastefully, they can add to that feeling of ‘candid’ and realness. So yes, throw in that velvet or lace article of clothing that you love so much.

Choosing your outfits

So now you’ve found your photographer and you’ve looked at your closet, but you still might be thinking “now what?” Here’s some quick helpful tips:

  • Dark clothes tend to slenderize

  • Muted tones tend to photograph so well (but a pop of color doesn’t hurt either)

  • Pick out similar (but NOT the same) colors. You each want to stand out in your own way, while still complementing each other. But you do not want to all be wearing the same color/jeans because that doesn’t look candid or natural.

  • Keep jewelry simple and minimalist

  • Do your hair the way you normally would

If you need color palette examples, I’ve provided a few in this post made from my own images! Feel free to save them or pin them for later.

I hope this made the process super simple and easy, because it really should be! These pictures are for you to treasure and keep forever, so why not feel comfortable in the process? If you still have questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below or shoot me a message through my “contact” page. Happy planning!
