Michigan Sunflower Fields: DeBuck's Sunflower Farm

There’s no feeling quite like immersing yourself in a field of vibrant sunflowers, or lavender for that matter. These bright, beautiful flowers come to live every summer and early fall. There’s one family farm in Michigan where you can stop to snap a few photos, snatch a handpicked bouquet or two, pick your own sunflowers, pick your own lavender, take a sunflower painting class, do yoga in the lavender, and so much more.

Let’s walk through Debuck’s Sunflower Farm together!

There’s more than 14 acres of sunflowers to admire at this family operated farm! You begin by checking in and heading to the sunflower field parking. There, you’ll find a concessions stand, in case you get hungry or need a refreshment, and the flower picking stand.

Once you pay for the flowers you choose to pick, you will be handed your container (ours was a small bag) and your trimmers.

Not only did they have a myriad of mystical sunflower acres, but there were wildflowers too (including my favorite - cosmos)! I must also mention this, it made my heart so happy to see such a diverse selection of wildflowers & sunflowers. I recently learned about the importance of biodiversity in produce growing (I also write posts about our urban garden if you want to read some of those next!) and the lack of produce diversity in stores. The next time you go to the grocery store, tell me how many different types of carrots you see? Note: this does not include size. There are 40 varieties of carrots and on average, grocery stores and markets typically sell 2 of those varieties. I’ll stop this rant short because I want to make a full post on it later, so I’ll just leave that little tidbit for you to think on!

During sunflower and lavender season, you can find additional classes such as yoga, offered on Friday and Saturday at 11AM for $25. This class includes a 1 hour yoga class, admission to fields, and a u-pick bag of sunflowers or bundle of lavender.

Art Classes are offered for ages 10+ on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 1PM (but I think they just opened up an AM time too and classes are filling up fast!) for $50. They include the painting class with Be Creative Studio, all supplies included, admission to the fields, and a small bag of sunflowers or bundle of lavender.

We actually took one of the painting classes! If you want to read our whole experience with Curtis Wallace and the Be Creative Studio, you can check out that blog post here: Painting With The Be Creative Studio

If you missed a summer U-Pick day, fear not. They continue to overlap times with the corn maze come September. If you plan on visiting in September or October, I will have a full blog post on our experience soon!

I hope you are all enjoying the end of summer!

Have you picked sunflowers yet?
