Fall Hiking at the Hungarian Waterfalls
If you are headed to the Keweenaw, you must add the Hungarian Falls to your itinerary. The Hungarian Falls Nature Area is open all year long, making it the perfect hike for any season! The parking spot for the falls was a little difficult to find in the fall, so I did add a map from the trail. The trails aren’t marked, and there are quite a few different trails to choose from. You will know you are on the right trail if it overlooks the river. From there, you can find 3 falls along the hike.
If you are parked at the lower entry point, you will follow a well worn trail large enough for snowmobiles or ATVs. As you come up to a bridge, the trail will begin off to the right just before the start of the bridge. From here, the loop begins and you should be able to stay on the well worn path. The trail is 2.7 km out-and-back, a moderately challenging route as it is uphill to the Upper Falls, and can be finished in about 45-50 minutes. If you are bringing children along, be prepared for it to take longer (there’s a lot of discovery to be done as a child!).
If you plan on heading down to the Upper Falls like we did, you have to leave the trail and slide down a steep slope. It’s a tad difficult for littles, so be careful and use your best judgement. Visitors are permitted to enter the water and climb the cliffs at their own risk. If you are coming in winter, the trails are mostly clear and packed but I still highly recommend bringing ice cleats or snowshoes.
As always, be respectful of the property and wildlife. Anything you pack in, pack back out to keep our trails clean.
