An Enchanting Sunrise Family Picnic Session Hancock, MI | Northern Michigan Photographer
Sunrise along the shores of Lake Superior always feels a little special. The beach is quiet, the air is cool, and the first light of the day slowly stretches across the water.
It was the perfect start to a summer morning with the Van Dyke family at McLain State Park.
We began the session right on the beach where the kids wasted no time kicking off their shoes and running through the sand. There were races along the shoreline, little footprints scattered across the beach, and bursts of laughter as everyone chased each other near the water’s edge. Moments like these are my favorite way to begin a family session—letting kids play, move, and simply enjoy being together.
After some time exploring the beach, the family spread out a handmade quilt in the sand for a picnic breakfast. It felt relaxed and unhurried, like the kind of slow summer morning families hope to remember years from now. Sitting together, sharing food, and watching the waves roll in behind them created such a cozy and natural moment.
As the sun climbed higher and the light grew brighter, we wandered toward the shade to continue exploring the park. Each parent spent a wonderful moment pushing a child laughing and enjoying their morning together.
From there we followed a small trail through the trees before stopping in front of a beautiful grove of birch trees for a few relaxed family portraits. The soft white bark and gentle shade made the perfect backdrop to end the session.
Running through the sand, breakfast on a quilt, swings beneath the trees—it was a simple and beautiful way to start the day with the Van Dyke family along the shores of Lake Superior.
