Kids Rain Gear Essentials | Wet Weather + Outdoor Play

There’s no one more disappointed than a child who is told ‘no’ when trying to splash in a puddle. Kids are only this small once, so we love to get our children dressed in the appropriate gear and let them explore all those muddy puddles! The snow is melting and April showers are filling our streams. It is the perfect splashing season. I am going to give you all the recommendations for the appropriate dirty/wet/muddy season gear so your kids can spend more time exploring this year.

Rain Suit

Your child will want the proper rain suit. Full body ones like Oaki will keep your child dry from head to toe, increasing play time and allowing for deeper exploration. Waterproof suits like this are made to last. Let them air dry, give a wipe down when needed, but try to limit washing cycles. Washing and drying these suits will remove the waterproofing. These suits are not insulated, but have reinforced liners so you can wear plenty of layers to meet the needs of your particular adventure. There are also adjustable velcro-straps and drawstrings, so I recommend sizing up for a longer-lasting suit. Other great options are CeLaVi, a non-toxic suit but it is thinner than Oaki. They also make rain jackets, bibs, and rain pants.

Waterproof Shoes

The quickest way to end a play experience is by having cold hands or feet. Your shoe choice is just as important as your rain suit. Neoprene boots are our personal favorite because they are longer lasting and more durable than your typical plastic rainboot. These boots are designed to keep up with rigorous children’s play, minimize slipping, and easy to clean. Other non-toxic rain boots are Bisgaard, with 5 layers and a drawstring closure for maximum comfort and dryness, and Stonz made with 100% natural rubber.

The minimal care required for both of these items removed added stress for us parents! Just wipe and hang - so easy, right?!

Wool Under Layers

Depending on your weather, what you wear under your suit will vary greatly. But the one major rule you should follow is to avoid cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture, which will make your kids cold, wet, and miserable. We like to wear natural materials, like wool. Smartwool is hands-down our favorite wool choice! With a two year warranty and a recycle program, their sustainability fits in with our lifestyle. Their clothing is also incredibly comfortable and breathable. Wool is moisture wicking and naturally water resistant, so I highly recommend wearing some wool socks to keep your kiddos feed dry and warm.

Rain Mittens

As I mentioned earlier, there’s nothing more disappointing than cutting an adventure short due to a cold child. Adding waterproof rain mittens to your gear essentials should be next on your list! These can either be wool mittens or a pair of waterproof unlined mittens like these ones from Reima. Reima mittens are made from recycled, PVC-free materials, long lasting, and completely waterproof. They also don’t have a liner, so they are a great choice for warmer temperatures.

Final Thoughts

When you are dressed for the weather, both you and your children will have more fun. Now go out and adventure knowing your kids will be dry and comfortable!
