A Romantic Family Session at Nelis' Dutch Village, Holland, MI | Northern Michigan Photographer
Some places feel like stepping into another world.
Walking into Nelis' Dutch Village felt a little like wandering through a small European town tucked quietly into the heart of Holland, Michigan.
Charming storefronts lined the walkways, traditional Dutch architecture framed every turn, and late-summer flowers spilled from planters and garden beds. Rose gardens were still blooming, ducks waddled lazily along the paths, and the whole village carried a gentle, storybook kind of atmosphere.
It was the perfect setting for this young family.
With one curious toddler leading the way and another little one soon to arrive, the entire session felt playful, romantic, and wonderfully full of anticipation.
Wandering the Village
We began the session simply by exploring.
The architecture naturally created beautiful little pockets for photographs—arched doorways, charming windows, and long leading lines that guided us through the village streets. Instead of rushing from one spot to another, we slowed down and let the family move through the space together.
Their daughter happily toddled ahead, stopping every few steps to investigate something new.
A flower here.
A window there.
A doorway that seemed just the right size to peek through.
The buildings offered endless opportunities to get creative. I found myself photographing through windows, framing the family with foreground elements, and using the natural shapes of the village to create depth in the images.
It felt playful and editorial all at once.
By the Water
Eventually our wandering brought us to the edge of the water where a small group of ducks floated lazily nearby.
The pace slowed here.
The family gathered together along the water’s edge, watching the ducks glide back and forth while their daughter pointed excitedly at each new movement. Moments like these are always some of my favorites during family sessions—quiet pauses where everyone simply exists together.
No posing.
Just curiosity, laughter, and a little bit of wonder.
A Picnic in the Village
Before long, we stopped by one of the village shops to pick up a few snacks.
The little girl was given a basket to carry, and suddenly the session turned into the sweetest little adventure. She proudly held her basket of treats, trotting along the paths as if she had an important job to do.
After a few moments of wandering, she confidently marched over to a small table and chairs that seemed just her size and declared it the perfect spot.
So we settled in.
The family gathered around the tiny table as she pulled snacks from her basket, happily sharing her discoveries. There was laughter, crumbs, and the joyful chaos that comes with photographing toddlers.
And honestly, it couldn’t have been more perfect.
A Little Slice of Europe
By the time the session came to a close, the village had wrapped itself around the story of the day.
The warm tones of the buildings, the flowers still blooming at the end of summer, and the gentle rhythm of the village paths made it feel less like we were in Michigan and more like we had spent the afternoon wandering through a romantic European town.
But what made the session truly special wasn’t just the setting.
It was the way this family moved together—playful, affectionate, and completely present with each other as they prepare to welcome another little one into their world.
A dreamy afternoon, a basket of snacks, a curious toddler, and the quiet excitement of a growing family.
Sometimes the simplest moments are the ones that feel the most magical.
