Stepping into a Storybook: Our Day at Gillette Castle State Park

Tucked high above the Connecticut River, surrounded by lush forest and mystery, Gillette Castle State Park feels like something straight out of a storybook. We recently spend the day exploring this unique destination, and it was one of those outings that left us feeling like we had stumbled into a different world - part fairytale, part time capsule.

A Castle with a quirky soul

At the heart of the park sits Gillette Castle, a striking stone mansion perched dramatically above the river. Built by William Gillette, the actor best known for playing Sherlock Holmes on stage, the castle is more than just a home—it’s a theatrical experience full of mystery, mischief, and one-of-a-kind design.

Gillette was a true eccentric, and it shows in every detail. As fellow lovers of murder mysteries, we were completely enchanted by his quirky additions—this place feels like the perfect setting for a whodunit!

He installed hidden mirrors so he could observe guests in the great room without being seen himself, and cleverly designed secret doors and passageways that allowed him to leave parties discreetly when he’d had enough socializing (introvert goals, honestly). One of our favorite features was his trick bar cart, which couldn’t be opened unless you knew the secret to unlocking it—making it both a conversation piece and a clever anti-theft device.

From custom latch systems to hand-carved woodwork, everything in the castle reflects Gillette’s playful yet brilliant mind. Our guided tour of the rooms felt like walking through a real-life mystery novel, complete with hidden clues and theatrical flair.

*Tours are only available at select times, so be sure to head straight to the admissions building to book your time slot before exploring the grounds.

Scenic Trails & River Views

The castle might be the main attraction, but the grounds are equally magical. While waiting for our tour, we took to the hiking trails that weave through the 184-acre park. The paths are easy to moderate, perfect for families, and offer gorgeous views of the river. There’s even a lookout spot where you can see the historic Chester-Hadlyme Ferry gliding across the water below—a ride you can take yourself during the warmer months! If you are a fellow Claude Monet lover, the park was straight out of a painting!

Upon creating his castle estate, Gillette had tracks laid around the property as well as two trains that he could use to bring guests around the grounds. Our daughter loved exploring the former train tunnels throughout the park! The blend of nature and history makes this park feel like a hidden gem, even though it’s one of Connecticut’s most beloved attractions. I packed my travel water colors and painted the many beautiful scenes while our kids ran around.
