Huron National Forest - Exploring Michigan

Every year, our friend group goes on a summer camping trip. This year we got TWO trips though! One of our good friends joined the Peace Corps and was preparing to head out to Africa. So, we went on an early going-away camping trip during Memorial Day weekend. - Eli, if you are reading this, WE MISS YOU! This years destination = Huron National Forest and the Au Sable River.

We stayed at a nicely secluded campground near the entrance of the park called Rollways Campground. On our first day, we set up camp - three tents and a canopy over the picnic table. We prepared our dinner for the evening, which was hobo foil packets, and went off on our first hike!

We kept our first night's hike a simple one and hiked around Loon Lake. There wasn't much to the hike, but the view over the water was well worth the trip. Then we swung into the Iargo Springs pull off. There we were greeted with a nice warm up! The Iargo Springs pull off had a long line of stairs leading down to a secluded wooded deck trail. Even thought the climb up was rough, this pull off was worth it! The views and the springs were absolutely gorgeous.

On our second day, Kyra and I woke up and headed off on an early morning hike to see the sunrise. Well, the sunrise wasn't part of the plan but it was a bonus! She always wakes up early and I thought I would wear her out a little in the morning with a half-mile hike, I didn't know that it was going to dump us off at a dock with the most amazing view!

When we got back from our morning hike, I started up the fire and put on some water for tea and coffee. A little after the coffee was ready, everyone else began strolling out of their tents. The next couple hours would be dedicated to hiking at The Lumber Jack monument. Upon arrival, we picked up some maps and headed out! We took the trail that followed the water and then deeper into the woods. Eventually, we turned around to head back to camp for dinner and games.

Our third, and last day, was spent kayaking and canoeing the Au Sable river. I unplugged that day and therefore do not have any pictures or videos from the trip (I unplugged because all of my equipment was dead and we didn't have electrical hookup at our site! I mean... I unplugged to enjoy time with friends!) While Kyra would much rather have been swimming, she enjoyed the trip nonetheless - and surpisingly she only tipped us over once

If you are traveling Michigan and haven't been the the Huron National Forest yet, I highly recommend it!

I would love to hear from you! So if you read this blog post, leave me a comment and let me know!

Thank you!
